When Power Meets Its Shadow
“No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.”
— Carl Jung, Aion
Something has shifted.
We’re beginning to see cracks in what once seemed immovable. A glimpse of possibility where there was resignation. A reminder that even the most entrenched patterns and structures are not necessarily permanent.
But change rarely arrives without a little chaos.
Scorpio reminds us that what we often call intense is sometimes simply what we can no longer avoid. Reality confronting us. Uncomfortable truths. Difficult questions. Beliefs and assumptions that no longer hold up under scrutiny.
Even those willing to look beneath the surface, question what others accept, or name what others would rather leave unspoken are often labeled intense. Like that’s a bad thing.
But maybe we all need a little intensity once in a while.
Scorpio is not particularly interested in keeping things comfortable. As the sign of transformation, it reminds us that growth and evolution often require us to venture beyond what feels safe and familiar. It invites us into the underworld, into the mysterious, the unexplored, and the uncertain.
And that can be unsettling to the status quo.
The deeper we go, the more we risk disturbing the foundations upon which we’ve built our sense of stability. But what if some of those foundations were never as solid as we believed? And what if discovering that isn’t entirely bad news?
The underworld, after all, is not only a place of darkness. It is also a place of possibility, potential, and even magic.
What remains hidden is not necessarily a dangerous dragon waiting to devour us. Sometimes it is a truth waiting to be recognized, a part of ourselves waiting to be reclaimed, or a possibility we could never have imagined from the safety of what we already know.
In Jungian psychology, the shadow represents aspects of ourselves we have rejected, suppressed, or failed to recognize. Jung’s work reminds us that what remains unconscious can continue to influence our lives, whether we acknowledge it or not.
Sometimes our efforts to avoid the darkness give it more power than facing it ever would. Perhaps if we were more willing to spend time in our own darkness, we might discover more light.
This New Moon may coincide with uncomfortable realities emerging, personally and collectively. Truths coming to the surface. Questions that demand more than superficial answers. And with Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, we may find ourselves revisiting conversations, beliefs, or stories we thought were already settled.
There is immense power in having the courage to really see. When we are no longer afraid of the dark, we become more perceptive, more discerning, and less easily controlled by what we refuse to acknowledge.
But power is never quite that simple.
Scorpio also represents its shadow: manipulation, obsession, control, destruction, and despair. The same ability to see beneath the surface can be used to understand and heal, or to exploit and dominate.
And when uncomfortable truths threaten established identities or positions of power, the reaction can be fierce. Denial, defensiveness, and attempts to regain control may become more pronounced as what was once hidden comes into view.
Perception can become wisdom, or it can become a weapon.
Enter Leo
This Scorpio New Moon forms a broad square to Mars and Jupiter near the South Node in Leo, bringing questions of leadership, authority, pride, and personal power into focus.
Leo is the sign of leaders, rulers, and kings. It represents charisma, creativity, magnetism, and the courage to express ourselves authentically. At its best, Leo leads from the heart, inspiring others through generosity, humility, and a contagious enthusiasm for life.
But when pride overtakes integrity, that same charisma can become a tool for demanding admiration, loyalty, and obedience. Leo’s shadow can manifest as grandiosity, narcissism, tyranny, and authoritarianism.
Pride can spark insight or mark the beginning of a fall.
And this is where the South Node becomes significant. The South Node represents familiar patterns, deeply ingrained conditioning, and ways of operating we may have outgrown but keep repeating. With Mars adding urgency and assertion, and Jupiter amplifying convictions, ambitions, and our sense of righteousness, these patterns may become impossible to ignore.
Collectively, we may be confronting familiar expressions of power: leaders who demand loyalty rather than accountability, charisma mistaken for character, and the elevation of individuals above the principles they claim to represent.
And Scorpio is not inclined to let these patterns remain hidden.
But the South Node is only half the story. Opposite it sits the North Node in Aquarius, pointing toward the medicine for Leo’s emerging shadow.
If Leo’s shadow asks, “How can I be seen, admired, and followed?” Aquarius asks, “How can we create something greater together?”
And perhaps we’re beginning to remember what collective power can accomplish.
Aquarius invites us toward shared power, collective responsibility, equality, and the courage to question established hierarchies. It reminds us that no individual is above accountability and that genuine progress depends on our willingness to think independently while working together.
There is something profoundly hopeful about recognizing that power does not belong exclusively to those who hold positions of authority. It also lives in communities, in collective action, and in the willingness to challenge what once seemed unchangeable.
In truth, this is not about extinguishing Leo’s fire. We need its creativity, courage, and heart-centered leadership. But those gifts become something greater when they serve the collective rather than the ego.
That is where the real work begins.
Exposing the shadow is one thing. Transforming the structures and patterns that allowed it to flourish is another. An election, a revelation, or a moment of collective awakening does not automatically create lasting change. But it can open a door.
What happens next depends, at least in part, on what we’re willing to do with that opening. Perhaps the invitation is no longer simply to recognize what is wrong, but to begin imagining, and participating in, what could be different.
From Endings to Beginnings
Scorpio knows something about endings. As the sign of death and rebirth, it reminds us that transformation isn’t always gentle, predictable, or particularly interested in our plans. The phoenix, one of Scorpio’s most evocative symbols, rises from the ashes of what once was. But we tend to focus on the rising and overlook the fire.
And it is the fire that changes things.
Sometimes it consumes the identities we’ve carefully constructed, the stories we’ve told ourselves, or the futures we thought were guaranteed. Sometimes it reveals that what we were so desperately trying to preserve was already falling apart.
The fire does not always arrive by invitation. And we cannot always choose what it consumes.
But we can question what deserves to be carried forward. There is something profoundly hopeful, and perhaps a little frightening, about recognizing that the future is not yet written.
Scorpio’s medicine is not the promise that transformation will be comfortable, or even that what comes next will be better than what came before. It is the invitation to see beyond what we think we know, to release what can no longer be carried forward, and to make room for what we cannot yet imagine.
Because that space of uncertainty is also a space of possibility.
Where the familiar ends, the unexpected can begin. Where certainty loosens its grip, something entirely new may take shape. And perhaps that is Scorpio’s greatest magic: the darkness we avoid may also hold the seeds of something extraordinary.
We love the story of the phoenix rising from the ashes. But what if everything we think we know about transformation is only part of the story? In the paid subscriber section, we’ll explore the psychology of post-traumatic growth, what happens when life challenges our deepest assumptions, and the surprising message of this New Moon’s Sabian symbol about what it really means to begin again.
